A foldable e-scooter is bought with two moments in mind: the ride itself, and everything that comes after. Folding it onto the subway, sliding it under your desk, lifting it into the boot. If folding it is a pain, it ends up staying home.

The range is wide by design. Under €600 you get short-commute models — lightweight and more than enough for 8–10 km a day on smooth pavement. Step up from there and you're into motors that climb hills without slowing and battery ranges that last the whole week on a single charge.

Before you check top speed, look at three things: the scooter's weight (the kilos you'll be carrying up stairs), the tyre type — pneumatic tyres absorb the bump that solid tyres send straight to your wrists — and the brake, because there are several metres of stopping distance between a disc brake and an e-brake alone.

If you're riding daily on hilly ground, go for a higher-end model. If it's for a flat weekend ride, an entry-level scooter is more than enough — no need to overpay.
